Course Overview
Founded in 1930, football’s FIFA World Cup has grown into one of the world’s biggest sporting spectacles. Throughout
its history, it has been exploited both by extreme political regimes and its own organisers, FIFA. This day school
will analyse significant events from the twenty-first century, namely the 2015 FIFA corruption scandal, the selections
of Russia, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia as host nations, and the development of the Women’s World Cup, analysing how the tournament can be used not just to promote extremist politics, but also to resist them.
