Course Overview

King Stephen succeeded Henry I. Much of his reign was consumed by a civil war between those who supported Stephen and the forces aligned with Empress Matilda, daughter of Henry I, who claimed that Stephen was a usurper who had deprived Matilda of her rightful heritage, the crown of England.
This day school will chart the course of the conflict between Stephen and Matilda and how it impacted the ruling Norman elite as well as the ordinary people, the towns and cities, and religious houses.
