19th-century Norwich citizens were enthusiastic gardeners, but in 1840 James Grigor, the eminent botanist and nurseryman, lamented that Norwich, “a city in a garden”, was without a public garden. Not so, today! This short course will introduce a selection of gardens, which are all open to the public but not all publicly owned, including the Plantation Garden, Chapelfield Gardens, the Bishop of Norwich’s Garden and Earlham Hall gardens. We shall consider their history and layout, how they were used and how they have evolved over time.
