In 1926, Chatto & Windus published F Scott Fitzgerald’s third novel, The Great Gatsby. Not many people read that first British edition, and it had been a disappointment to Scribner’s, its first American publisher. It was an even more piercing disappointment to its author. It baffled reviewers and was soon out of print. But today we call it a great book, an American masterpiece. In these two sessions, we shall study Fitzgerald’s very slender novel and its very long allure.
