In this day school we will explore poems and short stories that capture the spirit of winter’s invitation to both yuletide festivity and quiet reflection. We will consider childhood memories, nostalgia, nature and landscape and the many ways in which writers have found meaning and wonder in this dark time of the year. Through reading and discussion, we will discover how writers capture the magic and melancholy of wintertime and the Christmas season, and ask why midwinter continues to stir the literary imagination.
