Charles Dickens’s 10th novel, Hard Times (1854) depicts the interconnected lives of the people of Coketown and the enormous changes brought upon this fictional city in the north of England by rapid industrialisation and utilitarian philosophy. In this day school we will look closely at the ideas, themes and characters in the novel, discuss the intellectual and historical context and ask ourselves what does Hard Times tell us about Victorian England, and what does it tell us about ourselves.
