Course Overview
Author Katherine Rundell notes that, ‘children’s fiction has a long and noble history of being dismissed.’ But this day school contemplates its social, cultural and historical importance. Is children’s literature both mirror and maker of childhood itself? What might it reveal about why we read and what books are for? We will explore how fairytales, Golden Age classics, picture books and modern Young Adult fiction reflect changing attitudes towards childhood and consider how our early encounters with fiction shape us as readers.
