A short story is much more than just a story that is short. In this five-week course we will explore the development of this fascinating (and often under-appreciated) literary form from its origins in the worlds of myth, fable, fairytale and religious parable, to the invention of the modern short story in the 19th century, and all the way up to the present day. Classes will focus on discussion and close reading as, each week, we turn our attention to a different masterpiece of the form.
