The Dutch Golden Age is used to describe a period of cultural excellence and scientific progress in the emerging Dutch Republic. In this course, Professor Christopher Joby examines how ‘Dutch’ and how ‘golden’ this age really was. How ‘Dutch’? We will see that it owes much to people born in modern-day Belgium, such as the artist Frans Hals, and the scientist Simon Stevin. How ‘Golden’? We will recognise that much of the wealth was derived from slavery and indentured labour.
