In the last decade of his reign, Richard 11 commissioned two works of art that we now know as the Wilton Diptych and the Westminster Portrait. The former is a portable alter that Richard took with him on his progress through his realm, while the latter features Richard in majesty, crowned and holding the symbols of royal authority, the orb and sceptre. Each work is imbued with symbolism which, when interpreted, tells us much about how this doomed King viewed his kingship
